Seniors take long way to Harrisburg
NE TIMES
By Tom Waring Forty-five members of the Tacony Senior Citizens Club enjoyed their recent trip to Harrisburg, even though they took the scenic route. On the morning of June 13, the guys and gals boarded a bus to the capital city, which is about two hours west of Philadelphia. State Rep. Michael McGeehan (D-173rd dist.) sponsors buses for groups that want to spend a day in Harrisburg. This time, a last-minute switch meant a different bus company and driver.

The new driver was geographically challenged, turning onto the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. By the time anyone realized that the bus was headed the wrong way, the driver and passengers were in Scranton. Employees at McGeehan's Harrisburg office worked with the bus driver to get the group to the city. The bus arrived at 1:30 p.m., three hours behind schedule.

The group originally planned to tour the governor's mansion and the massive state Capitol building, meet with state officials and eat lunch in the East Wing Rotunda.

The staff at the governor's residence agreed to stay late and give the Tacony seniors a special tour. The group ate a late lunch at McGeehan's office, then toured the Capitol. They saw the Supreme Court and the Senate, where they were acknowledged in floor remarks by Sen. Mike Stack, with a wave from Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll and by applause from senators. "Everyone was so concerned that the 'lost bus' seniors had missed their agenda that they went out of their way to salvage their trip," McGeehan said. "They became celebrities while they were here as word spread around the Capitol of their plight." Vita Nardino, the trip coordinator, said everyone enjoyed the adventure.

"We got lost and ended up in Scranton. Outside of that, it was wonderful. We were treated like royalty," she said. Nardino and the other seniors made it safely back to Tacony, as the Capitol Police provided the bus driver with written directions on how to get back to the Philadelphia area.
